Listen/purchase: by Acid Baby Jesus

"An appetizer for the band’s upcoming sophomore LP, Vegetable deviates from ABJ’s debut in a couple of ways. First off the trashy production so in vogue just a few years back is all but absent here. I’ve been noticing this aesthetic shift a lot in the past few months. For example the new Ty Segall record sounds noticeably more hi-fi than his 2011 release Goodbye Bread. Over the top reverb is going out of style and this EP reflects the garage scene’s transition to more classicist recording techniques."

LIVE REVEIW: Hiss Golden Messenger/Strand of Oaks/Alexandra Sauser-Monnig @ Cat’s Cradle - Chapel Hill, NC - 9.13.2014

"Man, the hype around this guy! I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much on the radio, read so much in the Indy, or absorbed so much social media about any show I’ve covered save Hopscotch. M.C. Taylor has hit on something right, or at least something with wide appeal. Hell, even the lawyers I work with are hip to Taylor’s Hiss Golden Messenger."

STAFF SELECTION: The White Octave - Style No. 6312 (Broken Circles)

"In my eyes, Style No. 6312 is the first important re-issue of the current emo revival. Sure there’s American Football and Futures and other high profile records but there is a disconnect between massively successful emo records being reissued in a mainstream setting and a White Octave reissue. Frankly, the latter is both more real and more connected to the state of the genre now."

LIVE REVIEW: Jews and Catholics/Octopus Jones - Live @ Nightlight - Chapel Hill, NC - 8.22.2014
"Jews and Catholics was one of the most impressive bands I saw at Phuzz Phest 2014.  They were so good I decided I’d take the next opportunity to see them here at home.  About a month ago that chance came to Chapel Hill’s Nightlight."

Cayetana - Nervous Like Me (Tiny Engines)
"As I briefly discussed with Cyrus Atkins after Palehound’s set at Hopscotch, the female-fronted heavy bands of today are much more endearing than their male-fronted counterparts.  Guys rocking poetic about their inner complexities is a trope that’s been done to death.  The last few years have been dominated by women who are simply writing better songs.  See: Real Hair, Cerulean Salt, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, or maybe just listen to Cayetana’s Nervous Like Me.”
